Spin Space is a platform for emerging artists and curators.  The work is for sale, but artists and curators access the space for free so are able to take risks with with new work or curatorial vision.  And it's no spin when we say you can buy some mighty fine and affordable work here.

There is no fee but neither are there funds thus the work is done in collaboration with the artists, curators and VANSA.

'Iliso Labantu' opens 5 July at 6pm

'Iliso Labantu' opens 5 July at 6pm

Exhibition opens 5 July 2010

In the eyes of aspirant photographers from the townships of Cape Town and the Western Cape lies a story of the post-apartheid conditions within these townships, or ‘previously disadvantaged’ communities. This body of work, specifically, takes one on a journey to a place often depicted as negative and full of criminals and corruption.

The body of work is concerned with an objective view of the highs and lows of life in the townships and addresses the fact that, despite the challenging situations in which our people have found themselves, they have still managed to better the living conditions or, rather, to create a place they can call home. They have managed to create a sense of belonging and have built a sense of community; they have come up with various forms of entertainment, established small business ventures, invented games and toys that children make for themselves and have lived many other fun-filled tales. curated by Hope Sinethemba Magona

Philippe Kayumba 'Faces'

Philippe Kayumba 'Faces'

15 February - 12 March 2010

"I use art as a communication tool to influence people to develop their spirituality. I don’t create artwork as a new object, which will be displayed with no intention. I am a great fan of Kandinsky who used to write that “Art should serve spirituality”, “art is a strength and a power full of intentions, it should serve development and improvement of the human soul”." - Phillipe

May to September 2009 was a very inspiring period when I started to think a lot about people who have been important to me and influenced me a lot, both as a human being and as a painter.

After this contemplating period, I decided to paint every faces which came back to my mind at this time, faces which are still either inspiring me or haunting me.

This is like a journey back in the years when I was living in RDC (Congo), back into the years when I was a student in Art, back into the years when I decided to become a soldier like other teenagers, or more recent events like when I met my son for the first time.

I decided to paint faces like if I were still a child discovering people and life, paintings with rough lines and bright colors.
