Public sculpture competition
Three Anchor Bay Sea Point
Artists are invited to conceptualise ideas for a public work considering the site of corner Beach Road Sea Point and Beach Road, Three Anchor Bay, for the proposed work. The site visit on 15th September will begin at the VANSA office at 3.30pm with a full brief by Peter Hayes, we will then go to the site and meet with Sea Point Ward Councillor JP Smith. While the site visit is not a requirement for entry, it is strongly suggested that all interested artists attend.
All interested artists are required to submit a portfolio of 10 works, a CV with two contactable references and an initial proposal for the sculpture by 30th September 2009. Please note we DO NOT have a budget for printing.
A shortlist will then be drawn up and the selected artists asked to submit detailed proposals, including maquettes, and a budget, for an agreed fee, by 5th October 2009.The final decision will be made on the strength of these submissions.

Considerations
Please note that the biggest challenge of this commission remains the budget. We are aware it is not spectacular. There is space to bring a commercial sponsor, or private donor, on board and VANSA will assist where possible, but this ‘hope’ for more money should not be the basis of your proposal.
The work will be judged on both its artistic and conceptual merit.
- Works of art must be compatible in scale, material, form, and content with the surroundings. Consideration should be given to the architectural, historical, geographical and social/cultural context of the site.
- Due consideration must be given to the structural and surface soundness, and to inherent resistance to theft, vandalism and weathering. When choosing materials and structural elements, consider UV pollution, wind resistance, and other factors in the environment. Elements must be protected internally and externally from corrosion. Materials must be vandal /theft resistant and moving parts must have long service life and low maintenance cost.
- Artists should ensure that proposed work does not present a hazard to public safety. Artwork should have no accessible sharp edges, points, or projections that could cause injury, or have openings or junctures that could pinch or trap a person.
- Proposed objects shall be evaluated relative to their feasibility and convincing evidence of the artist’s ability to successfully complete the work as proposed. Factors to be considered include, but are not limited to: project budget, timeline, artist’s experience, and soundness of materials, city approval requirements, and level of community support.
