To celebrate the achievements and contributions of artist Dr David Koloane, one of the founders of the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios, we are calling for applications for the newly-established David Koloane Award. This annual award will be granted to an emerging South African visual artist, and preference will be given to artists from outlying areas who do not reside in major cities, such as Johannesburg and Cape Town.

The award winner will receive an 11-week residency at the Bag Factory Artists’ Studios in downtown Johannesburg from January to March 2010, which includes:
Free self-catering accommodation for the full period of the residency at the Bag Factory house: 19 Barkly Road, Parktown
A rent-free studio space at the Bag Factory to work amongst and learn from established visual artists like David Koloane, Pat Mautloa, Sam Nhlengethwa, Diana Hyslop, Tracey Rose, Gerhard Marx, Dinkies Sithole, Nadine Hutton, Churchill Madikida and Nontsikilelo Veleko
A stipend of R15 000 for the artists use (to cover travel and other basic living expenses)
An additional contribution of R7 000 towards materials
How are the applications assessed?
Nominations will be assessed by the Bag Factory’s programme committee.

How to apply
Please submit the following by 9 November 2009:

a single A4-page typed motivation, including your details and outlining reasons why you feel you deserve the award
a representative portfolio of your work including at least seven works and no more than 20, preferably by email. Images should not be larger than 300 kilobytes and each email no larger than two megabytes. (Please note that the Bag Factory does not accept responsibility for loss and damage of applications received by post and courier, and will not return slides unless accompanied by return postage and a suitable envelope/package. Please do not send original works.)
