Physical Sound (A Hands on Exploration) with Brendon Bussy
A general introduction to the physical nature of sound aimed at
visual artists who want to gain a practical understanding of how sound
works and how it can most effectively be created and used. This
workshop will cover found sound, sound documentation, making sound
generators and the physical possibilities and limitations of sound. It
will also cover the physical effect of sound on the human body.
In the process of exploring sound, participants will gradually
construct a sound piece and/or sound generator which will be completed
in the final session.
This is not a course in digital sound production e.g. software,
although it will touch on aspects of electronic sound production.
MAXIMUM 8 PARTICIPANTS
English speaking. Computer literacy would be an advantage but not
essential.
Cost: R300 per person
Course: 4 x 5 hour sessions
− Session one: Listening (How to listen to sound)
− Session two: Understanding (How does sound work?)
− Session three: Making (Ways to create and use sound)
− Session four: Presenting (How to present sound effectively)
Brendon Bussy Bio:
Brendon Bussy has a background in the visual arts, sound and music -
he has worked in these areas as creative artist, educator and project
manager. His broader interests include the development of technology
for use in a wide range of creative applications.
In 1999 he won the NICRO Community Safety Award for Offender Reintegration for establishing a photographic project for juveniles awaiting trial in Durban Westville prison.
He lives in Cape Town.

o Understanding the dynamics of resistance to working
o Techniques for dealing with avoidance and blocks
o Turning self sabotage into self support
o Developing and keeping the habit of working
Day Two:
Morning session:
• Finding your Creative Voice
o Understanding the uniqueness of artistic expression
o Discovering your artistic self and its expression
o Nurturing a supporting your unique creative direction
o Facilitating and navigating your own ongoing creative
direction
Afternoon Session
• Choosing, committing and staying the distance
o Developing an awareness of your own creative direction
o Techniques and skills for choosing a viable creative project
o Committing, planning and following through
o Ongoing evaluation
