In his first solo exhibition since obtaining a BA Fine Arts degree from Stellenbosch University, Nileru (Neil le Roux collaborating with the World) presents 'Revelating Now’, a series of drawings, video works and digital prints.

This body of work takes as point of departure the systematic art-making strategies employed by contemporary Generative and early Conceptual artists, specifically Hans Haacke and Sol LeWitt. The artist’s concern lies less with the final art piece, but rather with the process or system employed in making the work. We cannot escape our dependence on systems in any sphere of activity, whether it is the constraints of weather patterns, basic language rules, gravity, or printer colour limitations, we are always operating within a certain range of potential. Nevertheless, the development of advanced computation technology has shown us that even the most basic mathematical formula or equation will eventually produce magnificent synergistic patterns if allowed to express itself for long enough. It is with this notion in mind that ‘Revelating Now’ has come into being.  Through the deployment of pre-determined sets of strict parameters loosely organized around intuitively stimulated aesthetic impulses, art works (and any work for that matter) is no longer seen as the original creative expression of the “genius artist”. Rather, the work is experienced as a conscious collaboration between the artist and the World. This exhibition is therefore an exploration of the World as a living, active and fundamental participant in the manifestation of art. This is in direct contrast to the Newtonian and Modernist conception of an 'objective' world 'out there' – inert and stable until 'penetrated' or 'shaped' by human endeavour. An ontological position is thus adopted where the World is understood as both the seemingly external local environment and our inner individual comprehension thereof (world-view or mind state), which is in constant flux - the one changing the other as much as the other is changing it. The artist's role in the artwork thus shifts from creator to participator, from director to deflector and from instigator to integral.

The exhibition opens at 19h00 with a talk by guest speaker Katherine Bull taking place at 19h30.
